The story begins in 1995...

A brief summery

1995 - 1996	The founders of the Association, Barbara Gautschi and Prapapone Khotsanlee, work together as volunteers in a centre for young women victims of prostitution, the Fountain of Life centre in Pattaya.
1997 - 1999	Barbara et Prapapone join the Catholic centre in Chiang Khong as volunteers, in the province of Chiang Rai. The centre provides support to people living with HIV/AIDS. There they meet Father Peter Rangsan Phanurak, the founder of the centre, who is also engaged in missionary work with 15 tribal villages, the Hmongs in particular.
1997	A study is carried out for a project to support children who wish to start or continue their schooling. Private donors support a schools programme for 35 children.
1998	The association Le Sourire de Chiang Khong is created in Geneva by 13 founder members. Left to their own devices, the children of mountainous tribes suffer from the terrible poverty endured by their families, and generally survive in remote areas without any prospect of receiving an education. The mission of Le Sourire de Chiang Khong is to help them to attend government schools and save them from child prostitution and drug abuse. By proposing the construction of a centre, the association opened up new possibilities for these children to become active professionally in the life of the region where they live.
1999	The project becomes reality with the renting of a house in Ban Huai Sak, Chiang Rai, which can accommodate 25 children.
2000	The centre accepts ten new children bringing the total number to 35. At the same a sponsorship system is developed for a further 30 children who can remain in their villages. Cultural exchanges are organized with the schoolchildren of Cartigny, Geneva, and two Japanese schools. The Jeune Chambre Economique in Martigny, Switzerland, organizes a gala evening to raise funds.
2001	Fourteen children come to the centre. There are 49 children now in the programme. A growing number of sponsorships allow more children to benefit from schooling while remaining in their villages. The opening of a second centre, called Sourire II, in a Hmong village, Ban Khun Huai Mae Pao, Chiang Rai, allows a first group of three children to go to school. The association extends its work among the Lahu and Akha tribes. It contributes financially towards the reconstruction of a government school in a Lahu village, Ban Mai Tchockdee. The school caters for 40 children. The association opens a day school and a kindergarten at Ban Neunsadouak, an Akha village very far from any government school. The programme benefits 40 children and functions thanks to the young teachers hired by the association. The contacts established with the Government centre for Hill Tribes Development and Welfare culminate in a ceremony on July 27 during which the Governor of Chiang Rai confers the association with official Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) status in Thailand. Le Sourire de Chiang Khong receives a Medal of Excellence for Education and Health during a gala evening at the Victoria Hall in Geneva, organized by the World Wins Corporation. Swiss television sends a camera crew to film the work of the association in the field. The film is broadcast in December by the current affairs program Temps Present.
2002	Four new arrivals at the centre Sourire I bring the number of children to 53. Sourire II moves to the village of Ban Pa Bong where 12 children can now participate in the programme. The association continues to finance the schooling of children living in the villages. The 20 children attending the day school at Ban Neunsadouk are accepted in a government school. The Sourire continues to run the kindergarten for 20 children aged between three and six years. 150 members of the Thai Air Force visit the centre on two occasions, which is considered an honour by the population and a day of celebration by the children. On the Swiss national holiday, a group of children are invited to a graduation ceremony at the hotel training school at the Hotel Amari Rincome in Chiang Mai. The children enliven the evening with traditional dances. The foundation starts to look for some land on which to build a centre that could accommodate 200 children.
2003	The Thai government recognises Le Sourire Chiang Khong as a foundation. The results of an expert evaluation commissioned by the State of Geneva on the work of the association and foundation in Thailand are very positive. The number of hosted children continues to grow year on year. There are 72 taking part in the programmes of the two centres. Support continues for the children who remain in their villages. A big summer camp brings all the children together including those from the Akha village of Ban Neunsadouak, thanks to the help and support of the villagers and friends in Bangkok. The Thai Air Force pays a new visit to the home. A new land is bought in February. Work starts immediately on building a perimeter fence and creating two ponds, as well as the construction of the main building that is to include the dining hall and the dormitories
2004	The internet site www.lesourire.ch and the email address comite@lesourire.ch become operational. The construction work requires several moves and temporary shelter arrangements to avoid disrupting the children’s education programme. In particular Sourire II closes and friends of the foundation make a house available close to the new site. The work progresses with the construction of a kitchen, a water system and a well of 70 metres. Contact is taken up again with the people living with HIV/AIDS and members of their association with whom Barbara and Prapapone collaborated during their two-year stay at Chiang Khong (1997-1999). A programme of sponsorship for children whose parents are infected with HIV/AIDS starts with colleagues from the old AIDS centre of Chiang Khong. The children welcome with songs and theatre the telephone company, TT&T of Thailand. In Switzerland, the activities of the association expand, notably in the Valais.
2005	The year is marked by a number of significant achievements in the construction project: the installation of two enormous cisterns on the roof of the building housing the water system, several buildings are equipped with water, electricity and sanitation. Housing for the personnel, a laundry, and a computer server are also provided. This enables 75 children to move into the new accommodation and to start school in May. A further 22 children remain at the centre, Sourire I and support to the children in the villages continues. The kindergarten in the Akha village, Ban Neunsadouak, is closed. The majority of the children living in the village start attending a government school. The Foundation finances the construction of a library in a primary school at Ban Rai where some 40 children are supported. An opening ceremony takes place in the presence of officials from the region. The CEO TT&T, Thailand, visits Le Sourire de Chiang Khong. The only non-Thai among 300 laureates working for peace and human development in Thailand, Barbara is honoured with the Volunteer of the Year 2005 award on October 21 by Mr. Watana Maangsook, the Minister for Social Development and Human Security. Further expansion of activities takes place in Switzerland, notably due to a collaboration on sponsorship with the Foundation Ouvre-tes-Mains/ SOS-Adoption (Fribourg). A Valaisan member of the committee receives a Good Citizen prize on behalf of Le Sourire. This prize is awarded by Swisscom to projects nominated by their employees.
2006	With the start of the new school year in May, the Foyer is ready to house its' 99 children. Le Sourire also finances the education of some 80 children who live in their own villages. The existence of the centre is assured by its' over 180 sponsors, mainly from Switzerland, France and Spain. The entrance to the centre is completed by the construction of a building to house the vestibule, cloak room and storage space for schoolbooks and utensils. As well as an extra space for the storage of materials and two guest rooms. Participation at the 'Youth games 2006' at Chiang Mai. Three days of competition between the northern regions of Thailand. Purchase of a school bus to transport the children. Start of a new project with the elderly from neighbouring villages. The children help the elderly with different chores like cleaning, maintenance, cooking, etc. In return they teach the children traditional handcrafts typical to the region.
2007	The TSR, a Swiss television channel, broadcasts the Le Sourire de Chiang Khong, a 52 minutes long documentary by Claude Schauli. The film shows the dream-like evolution of our foundation since the first documentary, made six year's ago for the programme Temps Présent. Project Ferme: construction of a big barn as storage space for agricultural equipment, rice and animal feed. Construction of a pigsty on stilts. Summer camp organised by the Foyer's teenagers for all the children. A great number of the older children were trained to organise camps and to entertain. 95 children participated at the camp. The 'Foyer' is refurbished to house its 110 children. Even more Le Sourire finances the education of a further 100 children, who remain at home in their villages. Construction of two new out buildings to house the girls' dormitory, an infirmary and its staff. Renovation of the kitchen's roof and of the greenhouse, which were badly damaged during the hurricane. Construction of a football pitch. Expansion of the sponsorship programme in the neighbouring villages (Ban Sarapi, Ban Chiang Kian and Ban Sanchoum). Contacts are established with the schools and the village chiefs in the villages concerned. Fifty of our youths participate in the development of a centre for HIV/AIDS victims in Chiang Khong. Several children partake in a cultural camp in Vieng Pa Pao, organised for children from the northern region of Thailand.
2008	At the "Foyer", thanks to the generosity of the donors, several constructions took place: a large shelter for the children's activities, a second water-tower, a small house for the staff and a second small house-dormitory for the boys. The film directed by Claude Schauli "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" is shown again on the Swiss French Television. It is presented by the Espace interculturel of the town of Sierre on the day of the Children's Rights. Lisa Gautschi succeeds to Bruno Roth as President of the Sourire de Chiang Khong. Claude and Madeleine Schauli are nominated members of honour. A charity evening in Choully (Geneva) on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Association, with the presence of Barbara, Prapapone and P. Wirach, President of The Sourire de Chiang Khong Foundation in Thailand. Get-together picnic in the Valais with Barbara and Prapapone and the sponsors and friends. The Association of the Sourire de Chiang Khong is recognized of public utility by the Canton of Geneva and exonerated of taxes. The contributions that are given to the association can be tax deducted.
2009	Gala evening organized by the «Fondation la Nuit des Neiges » in Crans-Montana (Valais, Switzerland) in favour of our association. Attribution of the Adèle Duttweiler Prize 2009, rewarding Barbara Gautschi for her work in favour of the Association le Sourire de Chiang Khong. Participation at the day «Enfan’phare» – 20 years of the Convention on the rights of the child in Martigny (Valais, Switzerland) – information stand. Construction of a third dormitory-pavilion for the children – girls. The «Foyer» is able to accommodate all of its 120 children. Further more, the Sourire helps financially for the schooling of some 150 children remained in their village. Construction of a library at the primary school of Ban Sanchoum». Construction of a new building with a welcome area and the offices of the foundation.
2010	The Association «Courir pour aider» in Geneva attributes the benefit of the 2010 edition to the Sourire for the purchase of a new school bus. The children of the Foyer construct a recycling shed and repair workshop. Construction of two new dormitories, one for the girls and one for the boys. Purchase of a new school bus for the children attending primary schools. Purchase of a tractor. One month’s stage for seven young volunteers from Slovenia. Three young girls take part in an international scouts’ camp in Chonburi. The Sourire of Chiang Khong participates for the first time at the Fête of the five continents in Martigny.

L'histoire commence en 1995

Petite chronologie

1995 - 1996	Les fondatrices de l'association, Barbara Gautschi et Prapapone Khotsanlee, travaillent comme volontaires dans un centre pour jeunes femmes victimes de la prostitution, le centre Fontaine de Vie à Pattaya.
1997 - 1999	Barbara et Prapapone s'engagent comme volontaires au centre catholique de Chiang Khong, dans la province de Chiang Rai. Le centre offre de l'aide aux personnes atteintes du Sida. Elles y découvrent le père Peter Rangsan Phanurak, fondateur du centre, qui accomplit également un travail missionnaire auprès de 15 villages tribaux, spécialement les Hmongs.
1997	Un projet est à l'étude pour venir en aide aux enfants désirant commencer ou poursuivre leur scolarité. Des donateurs privés parrainent un programme de scolarisation pour 35 enfants.
1998	L'association Le Sourire de Chiang Khong est créée à Genève par treize membres fondateurs. Laissés à eux-mêmes, victimes de la grande pauvreté de leurs familles, des enfants issus de diverses tribus montagnardes vivent généralement dans des habitats très précaires et éloignés des structures de formation. Le Sourire de Chiang Khong s'est donné pour mission de les aider à accéder à l'école gouvernementale et les préserver de la prostitution enfantine et de la drogue. Projetant la construction d'un centre, l'association leur ouvre des perspectives nouvelles et solides d'insertion professionnelle dans la vie active de la région où ils habitent.
1999	Le projet se concrétise par la location d'une maison à Ban Huai Sak, Chiang Rai qui peut accueillir 25 enfants.
2000	Le centre accueille 10 nouveaux enfants, portant leur nombre à 35. Parallèlement se développe le parrainage d'une trentaine d'enfants qui restent dans leur village. Des échanges culturels s'installent avec des écoliers de Cartigny (Genève) et de deux écoles japonaises. La Jeune Chambre économique de Martigny (Suisse) organise une soirée de gala au profit du Sourire.
2001	Quatorze enfants rejoignent le foyer. Ils sont ainsi 49 à suivre le programme. Les parrainages permettant de scolariser des enfants restés dans leurs villages sont encore plus nombreux. L'ouverture d'un second centre appelé Sourire II dans un village hmong, Ban Khun Huai Mae Pao, Chiang Rai, permet à un premier groupe de trois enfants de poursuivre sa scolarité. L'association étend son action auprès des tribus Lahu et Akha. Elle contribue financièrement à la reconstruction d'une école gouvernementale dans un village Lahu, Ban Mai Tchockdee. L'école compte une quarantaine enfants. L'association ouvre une école journalière et une garderie à Ban Neunsadouak, village akha trop éloigné d'une école gouvernementale. Le programme concerne 40 enfants et fonctionne grâce à des jeunes enseignants engagés par l'association. Les contacts établis avec le centre gouvernemental Hill Tribes Development and Welfare aboutissent le 24 juillet à une cérémonie au cours de laquelle le Gouverneur de Chiang Rai remet officiellement à l'association le statut d'ONG (Organisation non gouvernementale) en Thaïlande. Le Sourire de Chiang Khong obtient la Médaille d'Excellence de l'Education et de la Santé lors d'une soirée de gala organisée au Victoria Hall à Genève par la World Wins Corporation. La Télévision Suisse Romande envoie sur place une équipe de tournage qui filme les activités de l'association. Le reportage est diffusé en décembre dans le cadre de l'émission Temps Présent .

Le Sourire reste en charge de la garderie de 20 petits de 3 à 6 ans. Cent cinquante militaires de la Thaï Air Force visitent le foyer à deux reprises, ce qui est considéré par la population comme un honneur et par les enfants du foyer comme un jour de fête. A l'occasion de la fête nationale suisse, un groupe d'enfants est invité à une initiation à l'hôtellerie à l'Hôtel Amari Rincome à Chiang Mai. Les enfants animent la soirée par des danses locales. La fondation se met à la recherche d'un terrain pour construire un centre permettant d'accueillir 200 enfants.
2003	Le Gouvernement thaï reconnaît Le Sourire de Chiang Khong en tant que fondation. Les résultats d'un rapport d'expertise mandaté par l'Etat de Genève afin d'évaluer le travail de l'association et de la fondation en Thaïlande se révèlent très positifs. Le nombre d'enfants accueillis croît d'année en année. Ils sont 72 à participer au programme des deux foyers. Le soutien aux enfants restés dans les villages se poursuit. Un grand camp d'été réunit les enfants des foyers et ceux du village akha de Ban Neunsadouak, grâce à la collaboration de villageois et d'amis de Bangkok. La Thaï Air Force rend à nouveau visite aux enfants du foyer. Le nouveau terrain est acquis en février. Aussitôt commencent les travaux d'aménagement de la clôture et de deux étangs, ainsi que la construction du bâtiment principal qui comporte le réfectoire et les dortoirs.
2004	Mise en fonction du site internet www.lesourire.ch et de l'adresse e-mail comite@lesourire.ch . La nouvelle construction a suscité plusieurs déménagements et hébergements provisoires sans que le programme d'accueil des enfants ne soit trop perturbé. Le Sourire II a notamment pu être fermé et des amis de la fondation ont mis une maison à disposition à proximité du nouveau terrain. Un total de 95 enfants participe au programme. Le chantier avance par la construction du bâtiment de la cuisine, du château d'eau et le forage d'un puits à 70 m. Reprise de contact avec des personnes atteintes de HIV/SIDA et les membres de leur association avec qui nous avions collaboré pendant notre séjour de deux ans à Chiang Khong (1997-1999). Un programme de parrainage d'enfants dont les parents sont atteints du Sida est activé avec des collaborateurs de l'ancien centre sidéen de Chiang Khong. Les enfants accueillent par des danses et animations la Société de Téléphones TT&T de Thaïlande. En Suisse, les activités de l'association s'élargissent, notamment en Valais.
2005	L'année est marquée par l'achèvement de grandes étapes de la construction: installation de grosses citernes sur le château d'eau, raccordement des divers bâtiments à l'eau et à l'électricité, sanitaires, maisons du personnel, structure pour étendre le linge, aménagement d'un local informatique. Cela permet à 75 enfants d'emménager dans les nouveaux lieux et d'entamer la rentrée scolaire en mai. Il reste encore 22 enfants au centre Sourire I et le soutien aux enfants restés dans les villages se poursuit. Fermeture de la garderie au village akha de Ban Neunsadouak. La plupart des enfants vivants dans le village, ont rejoint une école gouvernementale. La Fondation a financé la construction d'une bibliothèque dans une école primaire à Ban Rai où une quarantaine d'élèves sont parrainés. Une cérémonie d'ouverture a lieu en présence de personnalités officielles de la région. Le PDG de la Société de Téléphone TT&T de Thaïlande rend visite au Sourire. Seule non-thaïe parmi 300 lauréats travaillant pour la paix et le développement humanitaire en Thaïlande, Barbara s'est vue décerner le Prix Volontaire de l'Année 2005, qui lui est remis, le 21 octobre à Bangkok, par M. Watana Maangsook, ministre du Développement social et de la Sécurité humaine. Elargissement de nos activités en Suisse, notamment par une collaboration en matière de parrainages avec la Fondation Ouvre-tes-Mains / SOS-Adoption (Fribourg) Un membre valaisan du comité reçoit le prix Good Citizen en faveur du Sourire. Ce prix est accordé par Swisscom à des projets présentés par leurs employés.
2006	A la rentrée scolaire de mai, le foyer est en mesure de loger l'ensemble de ses 99 enfants. En outre, le Sourire soutient financièrement la scolarisation de quelque 80 enfants restés dans leurs villages. La survie du centre est assurée par plus de 180 parrains et marraines principalement de Suisse, de France et d'Espagne. La structure d'accueil se complète par la construction d'un bâtiment comprenant les vestiaires et le rangement des affaires scolaires. Une petite bâtisse s'y ajoute en guise de dépôt de matériel et de deux chambres pour les visites. Participation aux « Youth games 2006 » à Chiang Mai. Trois jours de compétitions sportives avec toutes les régions du nord de la Thaïlande. Acquisition d'un bus scolaire pour le transport des enfants. Un nouveau projet a vu le jour avec les personnes âgées des villages avoisinants. Les enfants du centre aident les personnes âgées en effectuant divers travaux chez eux comme le nettoyage, l'entretien, l'aménagement, la cuisine, etc. A leur tour, les personnes âgées enseignent aux enfants des travaux artisanaux typiques de la région.

2007	La TSR diffuse "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong", un reportage de 52 minutes réalisé par Claude Schauli. Le film montre à merveille l'évolution de notre action depuis le premier reportage qu'il avait produit pour l'émission Temps Présent six ans auparavant. Projet "Ferme": construction d’un hangar pour l’entrepôt des divers matériels agricoles, ainsi que le riz pour l’alimentation des enfants et la nourriture pour les différents animaux. Construction d’une porcherie sur pilotis. Camp d’été organise par les adolescents du foyer pour les enfants du foyer. Une partie des plus grands avaient reçu une formation pour animer des camps d’enfants. Ils étaient 95 à participer au camp. Le foyer est en mesure de loger l'ensemble de ses 110 enfants. En outre, le Sourire soutient financièrement la scolarisation de quelque 100 enfants restés dans leur village. Construction de deux nouvelles maisonnettes comprenant le dortoir des filles, une infirmerie et des sanitaires. Restauration du toit du bâtiment de la cuisine et de la serre fortement endommagés par l'ouragan. Aménagement d'un terrain de football. Elargissement du programme des parrainages dans les villages voisins du foyer, (Ban Sarapi, Ban Chiang Kian et Ban Sanchoum). Contacts avec les écoles et les chefs de villages concernés. Cinquante de nos jeunes participent au développement du centre pour personnes atteintes du virus HIV/AIDS à Chiang Khong. Plusieurs jeunes participent à un camp culturel à Vieng Pa Pao, organisé pour les jeunes de toutes les provinces du nord de la Thaïlande.
2008	Au foyer, plusieurs constructions ont été réalisées grâce à la générosité des donateurs : un grand abri pour les activités des enfants, un second château d'eau, une maisonnette pour le personnel, une deuxième maisonnette-dortoir pour les garçons. Le film de Claude Schauli " Le Sourire de Chiang Khong " est rediffusé sur la TSR. Il est présenté par l'Espace interculturel de Sierre à l'occasion de la journée des Droits de l'Enfant. Lisa Gautschi succède à Bruno Roth à la présidence du Sourire de Chiang Khong. Claude et Madeleine Schauli sont nommés membres d'honneur. Soirée de bienfaisance à Choully (GE) à l'occasion des 10 ans d'anniversaire de l'Association, avec la présence de Barbara, Prapapone et P. Wirach, président de Le Sourire de Chiang Khong Fondation en Thaïlande. Pique-nique-rencontre en Valais avec Barbara et Prapapone et les parrains et amis. L'Association Sourire de Chiang Khong est reconnue d'utilité publique par l'Etat de Genève et exonérée d'impôts. Les montants qui lui sont versés sous forme de dons peuvent être défiscalisés.
2009	Soirée de gala organisée par la Fondation la Nuit des Neiges à Crans-Montana en faveur de notre association. Attribution du Prix Adèle Duttweiler 2009, récompensant Barbara Gautschi pour son œuvre en faveur de l’Association le Sourire de Chiang Khong. Participation à la Journée Enfan’phare – 20 ans de la Convention des droits de l’enfant à Martigny VS – stand d’information. Construction d’une troisième maison « dortoir » pour les enfants - filles Le foyer est en mesure de loger l'ensemble de ses 120 enfants. En outre, le Sourire aide financièrement la scolarisation de quelque 150 enfants restés dans leur village. Construction d’une bibliothèque à l’école primaire de Ban Sanchoum». Construction d’un nouveau bâtiment avec accueil et bureaux de la fondation.
2010	L’association Courir pour aider à Genève attribue le bénéfice de la course 2010 au Sourire pour l’achat d’un nouveau bus scolaire. Les jeunes du foyer construisent un entrepôt de recyclage et de réparations. Construction de deux maisonnettes-dortoir, l’une pour les filles et l’autre pour les garçons. Achat d’un véhicule pour les enfants des écoles primaires. Achat d’un tracteur. Stage d’un mois de sept jeunes volontaires slovènes. Participation de trois jeunes filles à un camp international de scouts à Chonburi. Le Sourire de Chiang Khong participe pour la première fois à la Fête des cinq continents de Martigny.

Chronologie

1995 - 1996	Die Gründerinnen der Vereinigung, Barbara Gautschi und Prapapone Khotsanlee arbeiten freiwillig im Zentrum "Fontaine de Vie" in Pattaya, wo sie sich jungen Frauen annehmen, die Opfer der Prostitution geworden sind.
1997 - 1999	Barbara und Prapapone arbeiten als Volontärinnen im katholischen Zentrum von Chiang Khong, in der Provinz von Chiang Rai. Dieses Zentrum wurde für Aidskranke eröffnet. Pater Peter Rangsan Phanurak, Gründer des Hauses, ist ebenfalls als Missionär in 15 Dörfern tätig, in denen sich verschiedene Tribus, insbesondere die Hmong, angesiedelt haben.
1997	Ein Projekt für Kinder, die eine Schule besuchen oder fortsetzen möchten, wird ernsthaft in Betracht bezogen. Privatspender unterstützen ein Programm für die Einschulung von 35 Kindern.
1998	Die Vereinigung "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" wird in Genf von einem Ausschuss mit 13 Mitgliedern gegründet. Sich selbst überlassen und Opfer der unermesslichen Armut ihrer Familien, leben die aus den Bergtribus stammenden Kinder oft in prekären Hütten, weit entfernt von jeglichen Schuleinrichtungen. "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, ihnen den Zugang zu einer öffentlichen Schule zu ermöglichen, um sie vor der Prostitution und der Drogengefahr zu bewahren. Die Vereinigung plant den Bau eines Heims, um ihnen neue und dauerhafte Perspektiven für ihre berufliche Eingliederung in der Region, in der sie wohnen, eröffnen zu können.
1999	Das Projekt verwirklicht sich durch das Mieten eines Hauses in Ban Huai Sak, Chiang Rai, in dem 25 Kinder aufgenommen werden können..
2000	Das Heim nimmt 10 neue Kinder auf und ihre Anzahl erhöht sich somit auf 35. Parallel dazu entstehen Patenschaften für 30 Kinder, die weiterhin in ihren Dörfern wohnen bleiben.Ein kultureller Austausch mit der Primarschule in Cartigny (Genf) und zwei Schulen in Japan entsteht. "La Jeune Chambre Economique" aus Martigny (Schweiz) organisiert einen Galaabend zugunsten der Vereinigung "Le sourire de Chiang Khong".
2001	14 weitere Kinder schliessen sich unserem Heim an. Somit nehmen 49 Kinder am Schulprogramm teil. Auch die Patenschaften nehmen zu, welche die Schulung der Kinder unterstützen, die in den Dörfern leben. Ein zweites Haus, "Sourire 2" genannt, wird in einem Hmong-Dorf, Ban Khun Huai Mae Pao, Chiang Rai, eröffnet, wo eine erste Gruppe von drei Kindern die dortige Schule besuchen können. Die Vereinigung erweitert ihre Aktivitäten auf die beiden Tribus Lahu und Akha. Sie leistet einen finanziellen Beitrag für den Wiederaufbau einer öffentlichen Schule in Ban Mai Tchockdee (Lahu), die von 40 Kindern besucht wird. Weil das Dorf Akha in Ban Neunsadouak zu weit von einer öffentlichen Schule entfernt liegt, eröffnet die Vereinigung dort eine Tagesschule sowie einen Kindergarten. Es handelt sich um ein Schulprogramm für 40 Kinder, welches dank der Anstellung von jungen Lehrern durch die Vereinigung funktioniert. Die mit dem Regierungszentrum "Hill Tribes Development and Welfare" geknüpften Kontakte führen zur Anerkennung der Vereinigung als NRO (nicht regierungsabhängige Organisation) in Thailand, die am 27. Juli anlässlich einer offiziellen Feier vom Gouverneur von Chiang Rai bestätigt wird. "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" darf "La Médaille d'Excellence de l'Education et de la Santé" von der World Wins Corporation anlässlich eines Galaabends in der Victoria Halle in Genf in Empfang nehmen. Das Westschweizer Fernsehen (Télévision Suisse Romande) schickt ein Team vor Ort, um die verschiedenen Aktivitäten der Vereinigung zu filmen. Die Reportage wird im Dezember in der Sendung "Temps Présent" übertragen.
2002	Vier Neuankömmlinge im Heim "Sourire 1" erhöhen die Anzahl Kinder auf 53. "Sourire 2" zieht nach Ban Pa Bong um, wo nunmehr 12 Kinder am Programm teilnehmen. Die Vereinigung finanziert weiterhin die Schulbildung der Kinder, die in den Dörfern leben. Die 20 Kinder der Tagesschule von Ban Neunsadouak wurden von einer öffentlichen Schule akzeptiert. Die Vereinigung betreut weiterhin den Kindergarten mit 20 Kindern im Alter von 3 bis 6 Jahren. 150 Soldaten der ThaÏ Air Force haben das Heim zweimal besucht. Dies wird vom Volk als eine grosse Ehre betrachtet und für die Kinder ist es ein Festtag. Anlässlich der Schweizer Nationalfeier wird eine Gruppe unserer Kinder zu einer Einführung in die Hotellerie ins Hotel Amari Rincome in Chiang Mai eingeladen. Die Kinder tragen mit ihren lokalen Tänzen zur Unterhaltung der Gäste bei. Die Vereinigung geht auf die Suche nach einem Grundstück für den Bau eines Heims, in welchem 200 Kinder beherbergt werden können.
2003	"Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" wird von der thailändischen Regierung als Stiftung anerkannt. Die Ergebnisse eines Expertenberichts, der von den Genfer Behörden in Auftrag gegeben wurde, um die Arbeit der Vereinigung und der Stiftung in Thailand zu beurteilen, sind sehr positiv ausgefallen. Die Anzahl der aufgenommenen Kinder wächst von Jahr zu Jahr. Es sind bereits 72, die an den Schulprogrammen in den beiden Heimen teilnehmen. Die Unterstützung der in den Dörfern lebenden Kinder wird fortgesetzt. Dank der Zusammenarbeit von Dorfbewohnern und Freunden aus Bangkok können sich die Kinder aus den beiden Heimen und diejenigen aus dem Dorf Akha in Ban Neunsadouak in einem grossen Sommerlager vereinen. Erneuerter Besuch für die Kinder von der Thaï Air Force im Heim "Sourire 1". Der Kauf des neuen Grundstücks ist im Februar abgeschlossen. Der Boden wird sofort umzäunt, zwei Weiher werden ausgehoben und mit dem Bau des Hauptgebäudes, welches die Speise- und Schlafsäle umfasst, kann begonnen werden.
2004	Die Website www.lesourire.ch und die E-Mail-Adresse comite@lesourire.ch werden aufgeschaltet. Das neue Bauprojekt hatte mehrere Umzüge und provisorische Unterkünfte zur Folge, ohne jedoch das Schulprogramm allzu sehr zu stören. Somit konnte das Heim "Sourire 2" geschlossen werden und einheimische Freunde haben in der Nähe unseres zukünftigen Wohnorts ein Haus zur Verfügung gestellt. 95 Kinder nehmen jetzt am Programm teil. Das Bauen geht voran: ein Gebäude für die Küche, ein Wasserturm und ein 70 m tiefer Ziehbrunnen entstehen. Die Kontakte mit den Aidskranken und den Mitgliedern ihrer Vereinigung, mit denen wir anlässlich unseres Aufenthalts in Chiang Khong (1997/1999) zusammengearbeitet haben, werden erneut aufgenommen. Ein Programm für Patenschaften von Kindern, deren Eltern an Aids erkrankt sind, wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Aidszentrum in Chiang Khong erstellt. Die Kinder empfangen einige Abgeordnete der Telefongesellschaft Thailands TT&T bei ihrem Besuch mit Tänzen und anderen Vorführungen. Für unser Kommunikationssystem kann sich dieser Kontakt als sehr hilfreich erweisen. In der Schweiz weiten sich die Aktivitäten der Vereinigung aus, insbesondere im Wallis.
2005	Wichtige Bauetappen werden verwirklicht: Installation grosser Zisternen, Anschluss von Wasser und Elektrizität, sanitäre Anlagen, Unterkunft für die Mitarbeiter, Einrichtung für das Aufhängen der Wäsche und einen Raum für Computer. 75 Kinder werden nun dort einziehen können, bevor das neue Schuljahr im Mai beginnt. 22 Kinder befinden sich noch im Heim "Sourire 1". Die Kinder in den Dörfern werden weiterhin betreut. Der Kindergarten im Dorf Akha in Ban Neunsadouak wird geschlossen, da die meisten Kinder in einer öffentlichen Schule aufgenommen worden sind. Unsere Stiftung hat in einer Primarschule von Ban Rai, in welcher 40 Kinder von unserem Patenschaftsprogramm profitieren, die Bibliothek finanziert. Es fand eine Einweihungsfeier statt, an der auch Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens aus der Region teilgenommen haben. Der Vorstandsvorsitzende der Telefongesellschaft Thailands TT&T besucht das Heim. Unter den 300 Preisträgern, die sich in Thaïland für den Frieden und die humanitäre Entwicklung einsetzen, wurde Barbara als einziger Nicht-Thaïländerin, der Preis des "Volontärs des Jahres 2005" verliehen. Er wurde ihr am 21. Oktober in Bangkok von Watana Maangsook, Minister für soziale Entwicklung und humanitäre Sicherheit, persönlich überreicht. Erweiterung unserer Aktivitäten in der Schweiz, vor allem durch die Zusammenarbeit in Bezug auf Patenschaften mit der Stiftung "Ouvre-tes-Mains/SOS-Adoption" aus dem Kanton Fribourg. Ein Ausschussmitglied aus dem Wallis erhält den "Good Citizen Preis" zu Gunsten unserer Vereinigung. Dieser Preis vergibt die Swisscom jährlich an Angestellte, die ein Wohltätigkeitsprojekt einreichen.
2006	Bis zum Schulbeginn im Mai ist es unserem Heim gelungen, die auf 103 angewachsene Anzahl Kinder aufzunehmen. Zudem bietet die Vereinigung 80 weiteren Kindern, die in ihren Dörfern geblieben sind, finanzielle Unterstützung für ihre Schulbildung. Das Überleben unseres Werks wird hauptsächlich durch die 180 Patinnen und Paten aus der Schweiz, Frankreich und Spanien garantiert. Der Empfangsbereich wird durch den Bau eines Gebäudes mit Umkleidekabinen und Abstellräumen für die Schulsachen vervollständigt. Zusätzlich wird ein kleines Gebäude erstellt, das ein Materialdepot und zwei Räume für die Besuche enthält. Teilnahme an „Youth games 2006“ in Chiang Mai. Während drei Tagen finden die Sportswettbewerbe mit allen Regionen aus dem Norden Thailands statt. Erwerb eines Schulbuses für den Transport der Kinder. Ein neues Projekt mit den älteren Personen aus den Nachbarschaftsdörfern wurde ins Leben gerufen. Die Kinder des Heims helfen den älteren Personen in ihrer Wohnung beim Ausführen verschiedener Arbeiten: beim Putzen, Unterhalt, Haushalt, Kochen etc. Ihrerseits bringen die älteren Personen den Kindern die traditionellen Handarbeiten ihrer Region bei. Ein Team von zwei Personen des Westschweizer Fernsehens (Télévision Suisse Romande) hat die Aktivitäten des Heims während 10 Tagen gefilmt. Diese Reportage wird im Mai 2007 im Fernsehen gezeigt.
2007	Das Westschweizer Fernsehen (Télévision Suisse Romande) überträgt eine von Claude Schauli realisierte Filmreportage - Dauer 52 min. Das Dokument zeigt die eindrückliche Entwicklung unserer Tätigkeit seit seiner ersten Reportage, die er im Jahre 2001 für die Sendung „Temps Présent“ verwirklicht hatte. Landwirtschafts-Projekt: Errichtung eines Gebäudes für die Unterbringung von Landwirtschafts-Geräten, sowie den Reis für den täglichen Gebrauch der Kinder und das Futter für die verschiedenen Tiere. Bau eines Schweinestalls auf Pfahlwerk. Ein von unseren Jugendlichen durchgeführtes Sommerlager für alle Kinder des Heims – 95 Teilnehmer. Ein Teil der Jugendlichen wurde vorher durch einen Bildungs-Kurs darauf vorbereitet. Das Heim beherbergt zur Zeit 110 Kinder. Weitere 100 Kinder werden vom Sourire finanziell unterstützt, welche in ihren Dörfern die Schule besuchen können. Bau eines Einzelhäuschen, als Schlafsaal für Mädchen gedacht, sowie eines kleinen Gebäudes für einen Sanitätsraum. Renovierung des Daches der Küche und des Treibhauses, welche durch einen Orkan zerstört worden waren. Anlage eines Fussball-Platzes. Erweiterung unseres Patenschafts-Programms in den nächst anliegenden Dörfern (Ban Sarapi, Ban Chiang Kian und Ban Sanchoum). Kontaktaufnahme mit den entsprechenden Schulen und den Dorfbehörden. 50 unsere Jugendlichen beteilen sich an einem Entwicklungs-Programm angesichts eines Zentrums für Aids betroffene Personen in Chiang Khong.
2008	Dank grosszügigen Spenden konnten verschiedene Bauarbeiten realisiert werden: ein grosses Obdach für die Beschäftigungen der Kinder, ein zweiter Wasserturm, ein kleines Haus für das Personal, ein zweites Häuschen - Schlafsaal für Jungs. Die Filmreportage von Claude Schauli wurde wiederholt von TSR ausgestrahlt. Am Tag des "Kinderrechts" präsentierte die Organisation Espace interculturel de Sierre den nämlichen Film. Lisa Gautschi folgt Bruno Roth als Präsidentin der Verbindung "Sourire de Chiang Khong". Claude und Madeleine Schauli werden als Ehrenmitglieder aufgenommen. Wohltätigkeitsabend in Choully (GE) für das zehnjährige Bestehen der Verbindung. Waren gegenwärtig: Barbara und Prapapone, sowie P. Wirach, Präsident der Stiftung "Sourire de Chiang Khong Foundation" in Thailand. Picknick Treffen im Wallis mit Barbara, Prapapone und den Paten und Freunden des Sourire's. Die Verbindung "Le Sourire de Chiang Khong" wird vom Kanton Genf als gemeinnützige, steuerfreie Institution anerkannt. Die Spendengelder können abgezogen werden.
2009	Von der Fondation la Nuit des Neiges in Crans-Montana organisierte Gala zugunsten unserer Vereinigung. Die Verleihung des Adele-Duttweiler-Preises 2009, mit welchem die von Barbara Gautschi und Prapapone Khotsanlee geleistete Arbeit für die Vereinigung Le Sourire de Chiang Khong ausgezeichnet wurde. Teilnahme an La Journée Enfan’phare – 20 Jahre der Internationalen Kinderrechtskonvention in Martigny (VS) – Informationsstand. Der Bau eines dritten Bettenhauses für die Kinder – die Mädchen. Das Kinderheim ist in der Lage, 120 Kinder zu beherbergen. Zudem wird die Einschulung von gegen 150 Kindern, die in ihren Dörfern geblieben sind, von Le Sourire finanziell unterstützt. Der Aufbau einer Bibliothek in der Primarschule von Ban Sanchoum. Der Bau eines neuen Gebäudes mit einem Empfangsbereich und Büros für die Stiftung.
2010	Die Genfer Stiftung « Courir pour aider » hat den Gewinn des diesjährigen Wettlaufs dem Sourire zuerkannt. Ein neuer Schulbus kann angeschafft werden. Die Jungen des Kinderheims konstruieren eine Wiederverwertungs- und Reparatur-Werkstatt. Bau von zwei Betten-Häuser, eines für die Mädchen, das andere für die Knaben. Kauf eines Beförderungsfahrzeuges für die Kinder der Primarschulen. Kauf eines Traktors. Einmontaliches Volontariats-Praktikum für sieben junge Leute aus Slowenien. Teilnahme von drei Mädchen am internationalen Pfadfinder-Lager in Chonburi. Zum ersten Mal nimmt „Le Sourire de Chiang Khong“ am jährlichen Fest der fünf Kontinenten in Martigny teil.
